There are two stories today about the Texas senate race between Ted Cruz and Beeto O'Rourke that are worth mentioning.
The first is a piece in Vanity Fair proclaiming the O'Rourke is reminiscent of Barack Obama. He's a breath of fresh air in a stale political world according to the gushing reporter. He could easily run for president in 2020, or so we are told.
The second article comes from the Houston Chronicle which obtained a copy of the arrest report for Beeto's run in with the law for driving under the influence of alcohol. That O'Rourke had been arrested for DUI was already known. What was new was the fact that according to witnesses, after O'Rourke carshed his expensive car into a tree, he tried to flee the scene but was cornered and arrested by cops who arrived quickly to the crash site. Of course, O'Rourke's father, who was then a state judge in El Paso, arranged things so that Beeto was put in a program for DUI offenders. Beeto had to admit that he had been DUI but then agreed to go through a rehab program and other training. As a result, his record was expunged. The fact that he was caught fleeing the scene of an accident after driving drunk, however, does not change. And by the way, the fact that Beeto was arrested for trespass and burglary a few years earlier also does not change.
My question is this: how can the reporter at Vanity Fair think that America would ignore O'Rourke's history of arrests? Will voters actually approve of an accused burglar and drunk whose idea of taking responsibility for his actions includes fleeing the scene of an accident?
